Penmanship and a fountain pen
Jul. 22nd, 2010 10:26 pmI haven't done any work with Erika on penmanship up to this point -- it's something I was leaving for the beginning of official "Kindergarten". So she's mostly just been doing her own thing with writing. I've worked with her a bit on technique issues like holding the writing instrument correctly, keeping her wrist straight, and keeping her wrist below the line, but she hasn't been terribly receptive.
I ordered a fountain pen for her to use during penmanship lessons, and she was so excited to get it today, she wanted to start right away. I got out the handwriting book (Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting Book A) and let her have at it.

She was thrilled, and because of the way fountain pens work, she couldn't get away with holding it wildly incorrectly. It just won't write if it's at the wrong angle. I'm happy with my decision to get her a Pelikano Junior -- my own first fountain pen was a Pelikano, which I loved. The Pelikano Junior works very well and is easy to use.
She also responded fairly well to the idea of looking at the page after she's finished and finding the letter she wrote that most closely matches the model. I pointed out some things to look for; we'll see how that develops.
