I did not use the form my local school district provides. Instead, I used the form provided by the state, because I feel that the local school district is trying to encroach on homeschoolers' rights. Their form honestly doesn't differ that much from the state's form, but it's the principle of the thing. I didn't fill out any of the optional information -- race, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses.

Then I put the whole thing in an envelope, addressed it, and wrote in the upper right corner of the envelope a date about 18 days before the first day of school this fall. The state regulations say I'm supposed to turn in the form 15 days before I start homeschooling, so I figure mailing it 18 days in advance will get it there on time.

In January and May, I'll be expected to provide a portfolio of my child's work and discuss our homeschooling with someone from the school district. I don't plan to fill out the form they'll ask me to fill out in advance, since the regulations don't require it. I do plan to have lines ready like, "can you show me where in the regulations it says I'm required to give my child spelling tests?"

I feel...bitchy.

comments
